Requiem for a Master

Video | 2016

This video was created following the tragic news of the passing of Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami in 2016. Kiarostami is globally recognized as one of the most influential filmmakers and visual artists of the 21st century. The video features an excerpt from an interview conducted with Kiarostami in Iran in 2010. The audio for the video has been meticulously mastered and designed, and it is intended to be played on high-quality speakers (approximately 160W).

In 2009, I had the privilege of working with Kiarostami on some of his photo series. This opportunity allowed me to spend many hours sitting with him, editing his photos, and receiving valuable advice from him. One particular memory stands out: he asked me to create a shadow for a wolf in one of the photos. After we finished, he surprised me by asking for my opinion, which I confidently shared by saying that I didn't like it. When he asked why, I replied that I didn't know. He paused for a moment and then remarked that it's sometimes good not to know the reason. Ultimately, he said, 'delete it.'

Years later, as I gained more knowledge and realized his immense contribution to the fields of cinema and fine art, I discovered a newfound appreciation for Kiarostami's work and the wisdom he shared during our collaboration.
